Job Description:
We are currently seeking a Senior Estimator to join our new team in Belfast. This is an exciting role where the successful candidate will play a key role in securing future projects that align with our business's core values, encompassing Safety, Wellbeing, Profit, Environment, and Sustainability.
Key Responsibilities:
As a Senior Estimator, you will:
Project Evaluation:
- Review project drawings, contracts, and specifications to understand scope, materials, and requirements.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and designers to gather essential project information.
Cost Estimation:
- Calculate and prepare detailed cost estimates for labour, materials, equipment, and subcontractors.
- Utilise cost databases, historical data, and industry benchmarks for accuracy.
- Consider factors like permits, site conditions, and safety regulations in cost calculations.
Budget Management:
- Collaborate with the project team to establish and monitor project budgets.
- Identify potential cost-saving measures and value engineering opportunities.
- Attend monthly CVR meetings for feedback on current projects.
Bid Preparation:
- Prepare comprehensive bid packages, including cost breakdowns, schedules, and proposal documents for clients and subcontractors.
- Attend bid meetings and negotiate with subcontractors and suppliers to secure competitive pricing.
- Complete Pre-Qualification Questionnaires (PPQ) and Invitation to Tender (ITT).
Risk Assessment:
- Assess potential risks and contingencies in project estimates and bids.
- Develop strategies to mitigate cost overruns and delays.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of all cost estimates, bids, and related documents.
- Generate regular reports and updates for project stakeholders.
- Update the Weekly Tender Tracker & Allocation.
Technology and Tools:
- Utilise specialized software and tools for cost estimation, such as construction estimating software and spreadsheet programs.
Compliance and Regulations:
- Stay current with industry standards and regulations affecting civil engineering projects.
- Ensure that all cost estimates and project proposals comply with legal and regulatory requirements.
Client & Supplier Relationship Management:
- Conduct B2B introductions and presentations when required with clients and suppliers.
- Develop long-term relationships with key clients and suppliers.
- Source new clients and suppliers as needed to meet business needs and KPIs.
- Gather first-hand information from sites and ongoing projects.
Continuous Improvement:
- Stay updated with industry trends and evolving construction methods.
- Continuously improve estimation techniques and processes.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Strong understanding of heavy civils, tunnelling, and trenchless works.
- Experience in producing winning bids for projects ranging from £500k to £20m.
- Strong writing and communication skills.
- Organized with a keen eye for detail.
- Ability to multitask and support multiple teams in various remote locations.
- Capable of working independently on bids or as part of a larger team.
- Good contractual understanding, mainly NEC 3 and NEC 4.
- Experience in Bid Strategy and Risk Costing.
- Project Planning and Programming.
- Several years of experience in civil engineering, with a focus on cost estimation.
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and industry practices.
- Proficiency in using construction estimating software and spreadsheet applications, including Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective communication and negotiation skills.
- Project management experience is a plus.
- Professional certification (such as Certified Professional Estimator) is beneficial.
Desirable Skills and Qualifications:
- Auto-Cad Experience.
- Degree Educated, Working Towards Chartership.
- Site Experience in Tunnelling or Civil Engineering.
